The Oklahoma City Outdoor Network had a free kayak demo this evening for anyone interested in kayaking. All the OKC-ON members who own kayaks take them out to Lake Hefner’s Hobie Point and let people paddle them around. It’s a great introduction to kayaking, and a chance to “test drive” a wide variety of kayaks before buying one.
We had met some of the members back in March when one of Cindy’s co-workers invited us to a St. Patrick’s Day party, but these people are still strangers us, just not total strangers. But Cindy and I have never been in a kayak before, so we decided to see what it’s like.
As we pulled into Hobie Point, we could see there was already a large gathering of people around the beached kayaks. We trodded down to the shoreline, and within minutes Cindy was wearing a life jacket and pulling a kayak (a Dagger Delta) into the water. I spent a few minutes talking to some of the kayakers to get a better understanding of the different types of kayak before trying out a Dagger Blackwater 12 (which Cindy also tried out, but didn’t care for).
The experience was a lot of fun, and much more relaxing than we imagined it would be. The only scary thing about it was that, with the fairly calm water, it was incredibly easy to paddle farther from the shore than we thought.
Cindy was really smitten with the Delta, but it’s discontinued, but I think the Element 11.2 is the replacement model. We’ll probably have to take a formal class and rent a few more kayaks before we can make any decisions about which ones to get.
The one thing we do know is that we should have tried kayaking sooner.

THAT WOULD BE FUN AND YOU COULD CARRY IT ON YOUR CAR
Yeah. We just need the $300 to a put a rack on the car and another $1200 for two good kayaks, not to mention the money need for tags and life vests. We’ll get some one day. It just may be awhile.

That’s fine, I think we’re going to rent a few different ones before buying one anyway, because you really need to get it out in the water and use it for a little while to see if it suits you or not.
Also, some people there had stories about buying the cheaper ones when they first started, thinking that they could get two for the price of some other one, and it turning out to be an expensive mistake.
We’re looking at about $600 for something we’ll probably have for 10 years or more.
You guys should take a class with us…whenever that’s going to be. You know you wanna.
WELL I DO BUT YOU KNOW WHO DOESNT LIKE THEM
